Systems + Actions = Results

Taking action is the secret sauce. Achieving goals comes down to two things: systems and action.

You have to a map out the process for getting where you want to go—what do you need to do every day in order to make your goal a reality? Once you have a plan, you have to go out and do it. You have to take massive action, because action is the only thing that adds up to where you actually want to be. As the Greek orator Demosthenes said, “All speech is vain and empty unless it be accompanied by action.”

Whether they’re big or small, our daily habits form the foundation on top of which we build a better version of ourselves.

If your goal is to make Regionals next year, you know your nutrition has to be completely dialed in. So you work with a nutritionist to establish your macros and make hitting them everyday part of your process. Having a plan is crucial, but it’s the easy part. It’s the sticking to the plan that gives us trouble and prevents us from achieving our goals. Keeping your nutrition on track is relatively straight-forward when you’re training at home, where you’re comfortable. It’s much harder when you have to go out of town for a week, when you go out to dinner with your friends, or when your colleagues bring chocolate glazed doughnuts to work on Fridays.

Sticking to the plan requires you behave like the person you’re trying to become. Executing—especially in the face of obstacles—is the only way to get where we want to be.
